Manufacture and Application of Chitosan-Alginate Beads for Development of Environmentally-Friendly Agricultural Material

Abstract
To estimate the agricultural application of chitosan-alginate as environmentally-friendly agricultural materials, 5% chitosan solution was dissolved into 5% acetic acid and 5% brown rice vinegar solution. The optimal concentration of sodium alginate was 2.5% for manufacture of chitosan-alginate beads. Average size of chitosan-alginate beads was 6~7 mm diameter. Chitosan solution (5%) dropped into 2.5% sodium alginate solution including 0.5% colloidal chitin. After formation of chitosan-alginate beads, the morphological changes of the chitosan-alginate beads were observed in culture medium excluding colloidal chitin (10 beads/ 10mL medium). Degradation degree of the chitosan-alginate beads was higher enzyme activity in commercial enzyme (Streptomyces griseus, 0.2 unit/5mL) treatment than control without enzyme at 5 hours after incubation. These results indicate that chitosan-alginate beads could be used environmentally-friendly as encapsulation of effective microorganisms in growth of crop and control of phytopathogens in field.
